“I first discovered Brazilian jiu-jitsu a little over 6 years ago, I was living in Mesquite and started training at a little gym a few minutes from our apartment. I was only there for about 5 months and then we moved. After moving I didn’t train for a while, I had some friends who where MMA fighters and they would invite me to roll with them every once in a while, but I definitely wasn’t training consistently and I definitely wasn’t improving.
Almost 5 years later in September of 2014 I found Alvarez BJJ. I originally went there just looking for a place for my 2 kids to start training. When I went to check them out they said the three of us could try the free 30 day trial. Right from the go I loved it! The high level training, the high level instruction, the positive energy, the welcoming atmosphere, it was all amazing! Something about this place made me feel great every time I walked in, something about this place made me want to be better, made me want to push harder and made want to keep coming back for more. Sometimes after class I would be absolutely exhausted, but I always felt better when I did come, than when I didn’t.
About two weeks into our free trial I decided to sign the 3 of us up( me and my 2 kids) and I began to train as much as possible. At the time we lived about 45 minutes away in Glenn Heights, me and my kids were there about 5 times a week. In December 2014 I did my first tournament with Alvarez BJJ at NAGA. I was in the ultra heavyweight division at the time since I did weigh about 300 lbs. In January of 2015 I set a couple of goals, the biggest one being to lose 50 lbs before my 30th birthday in June.
In February I got serious about working out and eating healthy, me and the whole family made some major changes. We started eating healthier and with the help of Mr. Jordan Shepler I added strength and conditioning to my weekly training schedule. I was feeling great training BJJ 5-6 days a week and doing strength and conditioning 3 days a week. The dietary changes and the added strength and conditioning made a huge difference in my weight loss and my cardio. I was feeling great!
In June I achieved my goal of losing 50 lbs before my birthday! And by September I had lost even more weight around 70 lbs all together and I received 4 stripes on my belt. I’ve been training consistently at Alvarez BJJ for 2 years now. I’ve lost about 90 lbs I’m an assistant coach for the kids class and I’m in the best shape and the healthiest I’ve been in my life. I can truly say that I love BJJ and can say with confidence that I’m sure that this is something that I’ll be doing for the rest of my life. Jiu-jitsu has truly changed my life.
Yesterday on September 19th 2016 I received my blue belt I’m very happy to have achieved this goal. I’ve come along way, I’m very proud. But I still have a long way to go. I will continue to work hard and train and continue to improve and grow in jiu-jitsu and in life. I wanted to say thank you to my wife Denice Vasquez for always supporting me and my goals. I love you babe! Thank you to everyone at Alvarez BJJ for being great friends, coaches and training partners. And a huge thank you to my coach, mentor and friend Prof. Danny Alvarez for always pushing me to work harder and be better.” – Nick Vasquez
