October 4 & 5, 2014, was the biggest tournament of the year for NO GI competitors. Competitors, coaches and teams flew in from all over the World to battle it out on the yellow and blue mats inside the Felix Event Center in Azusa, CA. The NO GI Worlds was a 2 day event with White, Blue and Purple Belts fighting on Saturday and the Brown and Black Belts fighting on Sunday.
Team Alvarez BJJ in Arlington TX, representing the Bruno Bastos Association, sent six of their top male and female competitors to test themselves in search of some Gold and a NO GI Worlds title. First up on day 1 for Team Alvarez was Miriam Villar, Natalia Shepler, Danielle Alvarez, Rennie Crisafulli and Jordan Shepler.
Miriam Villar, fighting in the Blue Belt Adult Light Feather division, had a great match in the first round that she won on points over a tough opponent from Alliance BJJ. Miriam then had an all out war of a match where she came up short by a Ref’s decision in the Semi Finals to take home the Bronze Medal.
Natalia Shepler, fighting in the Purple Belt Adult Light Feather division, had a great match in the Semi Final but came short. She ended up with 3rd place and the Bronze Medal.
Danielle Alvarez, fighting in the Purple Belt Adult Light Weight division, had another super tough first round battle against Erin Herle from Alliance Marcelo Garcia that she won on points. Danielle then had another great fight in her second match that she won on points as well to advance to the Semi Finals. Danielle was up on points in her 3rd and Semi Final match but ended up making a small mistake that cost her the match. Danielle ended taking 3rd place and taking home the Bronze Medal.
Rennie Crisafulli, fighting in the Purple Belt Master 2 Light Weight division, had 3 fights on his way to Gold. Rennie beat his first opponent on points by a score of 11-0, beat a really tough opponent from the United Emirates by a score of 2-0 and then won his 3rd and final match by submission form the Mount after being up on the score board 19-0! Huge congrats to Mr. Rennie on winning his first ever NO GI World Title!
Last but not least was Professor Danny Alvarez, fighting in the Black Belt Master 1 Feather Weight division. Professor Alvarez had a great fight Rinaldo Antonio from Colisao/Aloisio Silva BJJ that he won by a score 10-0 to advance into the Finals. Professor Alvarez then came up short on points to a tough competitor in Thomas Barlow from Gracie Barra England to take 2nd place and the Silver Medal.
Alvarez BJJ once again showed that they have World Class competitors that can compete at the highest levels of Jiu Jitsu.
