November 3 & 4, 2013, The 2013 IBJJF NO GI Worlds results for Team Alvarez Jiu Jitsu Arlington TX are in! The Alvarez Army had another amazing run in one the last and most important IBJJF tournaments of 2013. Team Alvarez Jiu Jitsu in Arlington TX, representing Bruno Bastos and Nova Uniao, had 8 competitors fly into Long Beach, CA one more time this year in search of some IBJJJF NO GI World Titles.
First up was Danielle Alvarez (only 19 years old) fighting in the Purple Belt Light Weight Division, where she had 2 fights to the World Title. She had a great match in the semi finals where she ended up submitting her opponent with a nice Spin Under Arm Bar to advance into the finals. Danielle then had a really tough match against Annie Xioung, from Marcelo Garcia BJJ, where she was able to grind out the win by 2 Advantages to take home the Gold and her very first World Title in the Adult division.
Up next was Mr. Shawn Coughlan, fighting in the Blue Belt Master Light Feather division where his first battle was to make the 13 weight cut from 147 lbs to 134 lbs. After all the pain and suffering of making weight, Mr. Coughlan had 3 great matches with a very nice Kimura submission victory in the finals to take home the Gold and his first ever World Title.
Ms. Natalia Shepler, fighting in the Blue Belt Light Feather Division, had some really great performances where she won her first 2 matches in her division. Natalia dominated her 2nd opponent in the semi finals with a score of almost 30-0! She then went out and gave it everything she had but came up short in the finals against a very tough opponent to bring home a very well deserved Silver Medal.
Mr. Cooper Cardinale, fighting in the Purple Belt Middle Heavy division, had 2 nice victories where he won on points in pretty dominate fashion before coming up short in the Quarter finals. Mr. Cardinale didn’t make to the medal podium this time but everyone knows he will back better than ever at the next one.
Last but not least on Day 1 of NO GI Worlds, was Mr. Justin Rebolloso. Justin had a war of a match where the score was tied 2-2 until his opponent was able to go up on points 5-2 from a Guard Pass to win the finals. Mr. Justin fought hard and gave it everything he had. As a result, he brought home a very hard earned Silver medal.
On Day 2, Sunday November 3rd, Professor Danny Alvarez, Mr. Vin Abadie and Mr. Jordan Shepler were on deck and ready to make history.
First up, was Professor Alvarez, head instructor of Alvarez BJJ, fighting in the Black Belt Senior 1 Light Feather division. Professor Alvarez, just having fought 2 weekends in a row prior to NO GI Worlds in Miami and Tokyo, had to cut 13 pounds in 6 days to make the light feather weight class. Like his student Mr. Shawn Coughlan, his first battle was to endure the pain and suffering of making weight in order to fight and become World Champion. Professor Alvarez only had 1 match in the finals against his opponent Professor Joao Santos, head instructor of Gracie Lisboa from Lisbon, Portugal. Professor Alvarez was able to hit his Arm Drag Single Leg Takedown that he used to win his 2 previous NO GI World Titles with to score 2 points and get his hand raised in victory. Professor Alvarez took home the Gold and his 3rd consecutive IBJJF NO GI Black Belt World Title!
Next up was, Mr. Jordan Shepler, fighting in the Purple Belt Master Middle Weight division. Mr. Shepler had a tough match against his opponent in the quarter finals where the score was 2-2 with 1 advantage point in favor of his opponent. With time running out and about a minute left on the clock, Mr. Shepler tried everything he had to go up on points but his opponent was able to block all his sweep attempts and stall him out for the victory. Unfortunately Mr. Shepler was 1 win away from making it the medal podium and came up short this time around. Like his teammate Mr. Cooper Cardinale, Mr. Shepler will use that learning experience as fuel to come back better than ever at the next one.
Last but not least on Day 2, was Mr. Vin Abadie fighting in the Purple Belt Master Feather Weight division. Mr. Vin’s first opponent was Disqualified for either a no show or not making weight which automatically advanced him to the Semi Final rounds. Mr. Vin then had a great match that he won on points against a good opponent from Gracie Barra. In his finals match, Mr. Vin dominated his opponent going up 9-0 before submitting his opponent from the Mount with an Arm Bar to take home the Gold and his first ever World Title!
Huge congrats again to the Alvarez Army on another outstanding performance and showing once again, that they are one of the best teams in the country. Way to finish the 2013 IBJJF competition season on top.
